Hey students,
Many of my classes are currently studying and working on type projects (Photoshop 1 and Graphic Design 1) … The current trend is for type that looks really handmade. I’ve mentioned the work of Mike Perry in class, as well as brought in David Sacks text, Alphabets: A Miscellany of Letters.
This week, I discovered this article The Decade of Dirty Type on AIGA regarding this trend in lettering design. Have you noticed?? What do you think is the future of typography? Where should we go next?
A few artists who use lettering in their fine art and installation work include the artist, Margaret Kilgallen. I’m a big fan of the PBS Art:21 series and they have a great video segment about her work. If you aren’t familiar with this series, it has alot of great contemporary artists. Also, especially for my Intro to Mac Graphics, the designer Jon Gray’s book covers show examples of especially beautiful typographic solutions.
More film recommendations: Beautiful Losers (with artist Bansky, Shepard Fairey and Margaret Kilgallen).
Happy week! Good luck finishing your first projects.
